How to merge PDF files into one

  2. Check the order shown in the list — a phone picker often hands over scan_10 before scan_2.
  3. Tap Merge PDFs.
  4. Save the combined document.

Combine PDFs in the order you want

A file picker does not hand over files in the order you would read them. A folder of scan_1 through scan_12 usually arrives as scan_1, scan_10, scan_11, scan_12, scan_2, and a merge that respects that order produces a document nobody can follow. So the order the merge will use is listed for you before a single byte is written. Nothing is renumbered on your behalf: if the list reads wrongly, pick the files again in the order you want them.

Nothing is re-encoded on the way through. Each page is copied across as the bytes it already was, so an embedded font stays embedded, a scanned sheet stays exactly as sharp as it was, and the combined file comes out at roughly the sum of its parts.

What does not survive the join

Bookmarks do not. Combining files means writing a fresh document, and an outline that points into five separate page trees cannot be carried across intact — so the tool says so in a note rather than dropping them quietly. Filled-in form answers do come through, but as printed text: the boxes stop being editable.

A password-protected PDF cannot be opened here at all. Rather than hand you a document with the right page count and every page blank, which is what copying a locked file without its key produces, the tool refuses that file and names it.

Questions

How many PDFs can I merge at once?
Twenty, and the reason is memory rather than a plan tier: every file has to be held open in your browser while the new one is written. On a mid-range Android, twenty scanned documents is already ambitious. Merge in two rounds if it struggles — a merged file merges again perfectly well.
Do my bookmarks and internal links come through?
Bookmarks do not, and you get a note saying so. A link that jumps to another page of the same document is kept and repointed at the page’s new position. A link whose target did not make it into the output is removed rather than left pointing at whatever now sits there.
Can I merge a password-protected PDF?
No. This tool cannot decrypt, so it refuses the file and tells you which one it was. Open it in a reader with the password, print it back to PDF, and bring that copy here.
Is the merged file uploaded to a server?
No. The whole join happens in your browser, which is why the page keeps working with mobile data switched off, and why a folder of salary slips is safe to combine here.
