How to split a PDF into separate files

  4. Save them — each is your file’s own name with part-01, part-02 and so on after it.

Three ways to cut, and which one you want

One file per page is the starting point because it is what portals force on you: a form that wants each certificate uploaded separately does not care that they were scanned in one pass. Fixed chunks suit a report or a book — every four pages, say. Cutting before named pages is for a document with an obvious seam, like a statement covering three months.

Pages are never redrawn. Each part is a new document holding the original pages exactly as they were, so text stays selectable and a scan does not lose a generation of quality on the way out.

Why the parts can add up to more than the original

A two-megabyte PDF can split into forty files totalling far more than two megabytes, and it surprises enough people to be worth explaining. When several pages share one scanned image — a letterhead, a background, a stamp — the original stores that image once. Give each of those pages its own file and each file needs its own copy.

The same thing happens on a smaller scale with embedded fonts and with the index every PDF has to carry. This page measures the parts after the split and tells you when they grew substantially, which is better than finding out from your storage.

Questions

Can I pull just one page out of a long PDF?
Split into single pages and save only the one you want; the rest are files you never download. If you need a run of pages as a single document, removing the others is usually the shorter route than splitting and rejoining.
Why did my 2 MB PDF become forty files that add up to far more?
Because pages in a scanned document often share the same image and the same fonts, stored once in the original and once per part afterwards. Nothing was added to your pages themselves; the duplication is in what surrounds them.
How are the split files named?
After the file you started with. A document called statement.pdf gives you statement-part-01.pdf, statement-part-02.pdf and so on, with the numbers padded so they sort correctly in a folder.
Does splitting reduce quality?
No. Pages are copied rather than re-encoded, so a scanned page inside a part is the identical scan it was in the original. Bookmarks are the one thing that cannot come along, and the tool says so when your file had any.
