How to remove pages from a PDF

  1. Tap Choose a PDF and pick the document you need trimmed.
  2. Enter the pages to take out, as single numbers or ranges such as 4-9.
  3. Tap Delete pages.
  4. Save the shorter document.

Removed means removed

The cheap way to shorten a PDF is to leave the file alone and append a small correction to the end of it saying which pages to show. Every original byte is still sitting there, and cutting the appended part back off restores every page you believed you had deleted, text and all. We measured exactly that on a file produced the cheap way.

This tool writes a new document instead. The pages you keep are copied into it and the ones you named are never written at all, so there is nothing left in the bytes to recover. On a payslip with a figure on page two, or a bank statement you are sending to a landlord, that difference is the whole reason to use this rather than a print-to-PDF trick.

What comes with you, and what does not

Everything on the pages you keep travels: the scan itself, embedded fonts, each page’s size, and any rotation it was already carrying. A link that pointed at a page you deleted is dropped rather than left aimed at whatever now occupies that position, and the tool tells you when that happened.

Bookmarks are lost, because a new document means a rewritten outline and an outline whose destinations have gone is worse than none. Answers typed into a form stay visible on the page but stop being editable.

Questions

How do I type the pages to remove?
Single numbers and ranges separated by commas — 1, 4-9, 12. The numbers count sheets in the PDF, not whatever is printed on the page, so a document with a cover sheet runs one ahead of its own printed numbering.
Can I keep a few pages instead of removing many?
Not from this page, which is built the other way round. For a long document where you want three pages, splitting into single pages and saving those three is quicker than typing out a long list of removals.
Could someone recover the deleted pages from the new file?
Not from the file this tool produces — the kept pages are written into a fresh document and the removed ones never go into it. A copy you have already sent to somebody is of course beyond the reach of any tool.
Does the PDF get smaller?
Usually, roughly in proportion to what you dropped. It will not fall to exactly that fraction, because fonts and any images shared with the pages you kept still have to be stored once in the new file.
