Turn a Sideways PDF Upright

A document fed into the scanner the wrong way round opens on its side, and some portals reject it for that alone. Turn the pages that need it a quarter at a time and save the corrected file. Nothing is uploaded, and nothing is re-scanned — the pages themselves are left alone.

How to turn a sideways PDF upright

  1. Tap Choose a PDF to rotate and pick the sideways document.
  2. Turn the pages that need it — each tap is one quarter turn clockwise.
  3. Tap Rotate pages.
  4. Save the upright document.

A rotation is an instruction, not a redraw

A PDF stores rotation as a number written on the page rather than by turning the picture itself. This tool adds a quarter turn to whatever that number already said, and copies everything else about the page across untouched. So the text stays selectable, a scan keeps every bit of the detail it had, and the file comes out at about the size it went in.

It also means the correction holds up at the other end. A page turned this way is upright in every reader, in a browser and in print — unlike a scan somebody has rotated in a photo app and pasted back in, which often arrives sideways again.

Pages that were already turned

Plenty of scans arrive carrying a rotation of their own, written by the scanner. Because this tool adds a turn rather than setting one, a page that came in at ninety degrees and gets one more quarter lands at a hundred and eighty. That is what pressing rotate twice ought to do, and it is what the result shows.

Odd angles turn up too. A few scanners write a rotation that is not a multiple of ninety, which some readers refuse outright; here it is rounded to the nearest quarter and the file opens rather than being thrown out.

Questions

Can I rotate just one page and leave the rest?
Yes. Rotation is set per page, and a page you do not turn is written out exactly as it came in. That is the usual case — one sheet went through the feeder the wrong way and the other nine are fine.
Does rotating make the file bigger?
Not meaningfully. Only a small instruction on the page changes; the scan or the text underneath is copied over as the bytes it already was, so the size barely moves.
Why does my PDF still open sideways afterwards?
First check you opened the file you saved and not the original, which phone galleries will happily hand back to you under a similar name. If it really is the new file, your reader may be applying its own screen rotation on top of the page’s.
Can I rotate a password-protected PDF?
No. A locked file cannot be opened here, and it is refused outright rather than half processed into something unreadable. Unlock it in a reader first and print it back to PDF, then bring that copy here.
