Signature Background Remover for Forms and Exams

A photographed signature rarely comes back the way it went in: the paper records as grey, a shadow crosses one corner, and the notebook’s ruled lines ride along. This page cleans the photo on your own device — paper out, ink properly black, strokes left smooth — and can shrink the result to the exact kilobyte window a form demands.

How to signature background remover for forms and exams

  1. Photograph the signature in even light, or pick up the photo you already have.
  2. Tap Choose a photo of your signature. One file at a time — that is all a form wants anyway.
  3. If the preview keeps too much paper or eats thin strokes, open Paper cleanup and nudge the strength.
  4. Tap Clean up signature, check the result, and save it — set a kilobyte target first if your form names one.

Why an AI cutout is the wrong tool for ink

The popular background removers run a model trained to find salient objects — people, pets, products. Point that at a photograph of ink on paper and it hesitates: the strokes come back half-transparent, the paper texture survives between them, and the ruled lines stay because a ruled line is, to such a model, a perfectly good object. The failure is not your photo. It is the algorithm.

A signature is a lighting problem, not an object-detection problem, so this page measures the paper’s brightness in small neighbourhoods and thresholds each one against its own local value. A shadow across one corner stops mattering, because that corner is judged by its own light. It runs in about fifties of a second, on your phone, with nothing to download — which is why there is no wait here when other pages of this site do have one.

The ruled notebook is not a problem

Signed on lined paper? Rows that are long, thin and nearly full-width are found by scanning the cleaned image line by line and lifted out — except wherever your signature actually crosses them, because cutting there would slice a stroke in two. Stray dust and paper speckle smaller than the dot of an i are dropped too, and the result is cropped tight to the ink with a small even margin, ready to drop into a form field.

Everything happens on your device. The photo is read by your browser, cleaned by your browser, and handed straight back — no upload exists anywhere in the pipeline, so the most identifying scribble you own never leaves your hands.

Meeting a 10 to 20 KB window

Exam portals love a hard number: signature under 20 KB, JPG only. Guessing at a quality slider until you happen to land under the line is the wrong way to spend an evening. Set the target size instead and the tool searches for the most detailed file at or under your number, re-rendering from the clean original as it goes rather than re-compressing an already compressed copy.

If the target genuinely cannot be met without shredding the strokes, it says so and hands you the closest attempt with the size printed on it. You get a file either way — never a refusal.

Questions

Is a phone photo good enough, or does it need a scan?
A phone photo is fine. Sign on white paper in thick black or blue ink, shoot in daylight with no shadow across the page, and fill the frame. Even light matters more than an expensive camera, because even light is exactly what the local cleanup reads best.
Can the ink be blue instead of black?
Yes. The cleaned strokes are repainted in the colour you pick before saving — black to match a ballpoint original, blue for the bank and government forms that insist on it. Either way the ink comes back solid, not grey.
Will it remove the blue ruled lines from my notebook?
Lines that run long, thin and nearly edge to edge are removed automatically, while any stroke crossing them is kept intact. A vertical margin rule is treated the same way. If a line ever survives, turning the strength up slightly usually finishes it.
My form says the signature must be under 20 KB. How do I hit that exactly?
Type 20 into the target size box behind Paper cleanup and run it again. The search stops at the sharpest file it can make at or under 20 KB and tells you the final size. For the dimensions half of the requirement, the signature resizer linked below takes over from here.
