SSC CGL captures your photograph through its own camera while you fill the form, so for that application the only image you prepare is a signature. One Time Registration is the other story — it still takes an uploaded photograph of 20 to 50 KB. This page does both and tells you which is which.

How to photo and signature sizes for SSC

  1. Work out which step you are on: One Time Registration takes an uploaded photo, CGL takes your picture at its own camera.
  2. Tap Choose your SSC photo and signature and pick what you actually need. The signature on its own is fine.
  3. Choose the signature shape your notice prints: 6.0 by 2.0 cm from para 9.6, or 4.0 by 2.0 cm from Annexure-IV.
  4. Tap Resize for SSC, then check each file is inside its window before saving.

CGL stopped accepting an uploaded photograph

The photograph for CGL is now taken live, by SSC, during the application itself. That makes the signature the only file most candidates prepare, and it makes the old shortcut worse than useless: the notice treats photographing an existing printed photograph as grounds for rejecting the application.

The photo half of this page is for SSC One Time Registration, which does still take an uploaded colour photograph between 20 and 50 KB. Those kilobytes are SSC’s own, from their upload block, last read on 20 August 2026 — the date is on the page because a rule that changed once can change again.

One notice, two signature sizes

The CGL notice gives the signature as 6.0 by 2.0 centimetres in paragraph 9.6 and as 4.0 by 2.0 centimetres in Annexure-IV. Same document, two answers. We are not going to pick for you: both are offered above, each labelled with the paragraph it came from, so you can match whichever figure your own notice shows.

The height is 2.0 centimetres either way, so a scan cropped tight around the strokes serves both. The window is 10 to 20 KB, in black ink on white paper, and that part SSC states only once.

The pixel table you found elsewhere was invented

SSC publishes a kilobyte window and framing rules. It publishes no pixel dimensions and no DPI, anywhere. Every page headed with an official SSC photo size in pixels worked that number out privately, and the ones we compared did not agree with each other.

Ours is arithmetic as well, and we say so: 3.5 by 4.5 centimetres at 300 DPI comes to 413 by 531 pixels. Type it in if a box demands pixels. Do not carry it around as though SSC had set it.

Questions

Do I still need to resize an SSC photo?
For One Time Registration, yes — that upload is still 20 to 50 KB. For CGL the photograph is captured by SSC and the signature is the only file you hand over.
Should I use 6 × 2 cm or 4 × 2 cm for the signature?
Whichever your own notice prints. Both figures are genuinely SSC’s, from two places in one document, and the tool shows the paragraph beside each so you can check against the PDF you were sent rather than trusting us.
My signature file is under 10 KB. Will it be accepted?
A stated minimum is usually enforced at the upload step, and a clean signature is naturally two to four kilobytes, so this happens constantly. Clearing 10 KB means a bigger pixel grid; the tool prints the grid it used and never pads the file with empty bytes to fake the weight.
Can I photograph my signature instead of scanning it?
Yes, in even light with the paper filling the frame. Phone photos of paper come out grey, the automatic cleanup that would fix that is not built yet, so sign in thick black ink and shoot in daylight.
