How to resize a photo and signature together

A signature is not a small photograph

The photograph is a tall rectangle, roughly 3.5 by 4.5 centimetres, and it is a face in continuous tone. The signature is a wide one, roughly 6 by 2, and it is a few strokes of ink on white paper. Squeezing a signature into a photo-shaped box leaves it floating in a field of white, which is the version portals bounce.

The byte limits pull in opposite directions too. A face needs enough quality to stay a face, so a photo window is the harder one to land inside. A signature is nearly empty, so it compresses so far that the trouble is usually the other way round — coming out under a minimum the form insists on.

3.5 by 4.5 centimetres, 6 by 2 centimetres, a 50 KB ceiling on the photograph and 20 KB on the signature: those are the figures Indian forms most often print, and we have chosen them as sensible defaults. Not one of them is quoted from a rule, and this page will not pretend otherwise.

If you are filling a named application, use its own page instead. The SSC, UPSC and NEET pages carry that body’s published window, the document it came from and the day somebody last read it, and they say per number which figures the portal actually set and which are our arithmetic. Every field is editable here in any case, so a window we have not covered is a number you can type in.

The signature cleanup is not built yet

Photograph a signature on paper with a phone and you get a grey sheet with a shadow across the corner. The proper fix is to threshold it back to black ink on white, and that is not in this version. What happens today is that the image is flattened onto white and resized. If your scan is grey, scan it again in better light, or sign in thicker black ink — that costs a minute and works now.

Questions

Can I do just the signature, and leave the photo for later?
Yes. A row with no file in it is reported as waiting rather than treated as a failure, and the file you did supply is processed and handed to you.
The form gave me pixels, not centimetres. Now what?
Type the pixels in. Centimetres only become pixels once a DPI is fixed, so a form that names both has told you its DPI whether it meant to or not — divide one by the other. Where a form names only pixels, the pixels are the whole instruction.
My signature comes out too small in kilobytes. Is that a problem?
It is, if your form sets a minimum, and it is common — a clean signature is naturally a couple of kilobytes. The fix is a bigger pixel grid, not padding the file with empty bytes, and this tool will tell you which grid it had to use.
Is there a watermark or a daily limit?
Neither, on any page here. Nothing is metered, nothing is counted, and there is no account to make before the second file.
