A tribunal, a university and half the banks want page numbers before they accept a submission, and a scanner does not add them. How to add page numbers to a PDF

  1. Choose the PDF that needs numbering.
  2. Check the format and corner against whatever the guidelines say.
  3. Set the first number if the cover counts as zero, or skip numbering it entirely.
  4. Press Add page numbers and save the result.

Covers, appendices and other counting traps

Two switches handle the cases that trip other tools up. First number shifts what page one is CALLED, for documents whose cover is sheet zero. Skip the first page leaves the cover clean while every later footer still says its true count — so page two of the file reads "Page 2", exactly as a stapled pack would.

The wording follows the same rules: "Page 3 of 12" for guidelines that spell it out, a bare "3" where only the number belongs, and "3 of 12" in between. The position picks a corner or an edge-centre, inset by the margin you set.

Questions

Can I number only some of the pages?
Yes — the page box takes any range, so 2-10 numbers those sheets and leaves the rest untouched. A range the size field rejects is rejected with the reason, not silently ignored.
Will the numbers overwrite content near the edge?
They draw on top of whatever is there, like ink. The margin setting lifts them inward; if a footer already exists, put yours above or below it rather than through it.
Does it work on a sideways scan?
Yes. Pages carrying their own rotation are numbered in the space you see, so the footer sits at the foot of the page in front of you and reads upright.
